Knife Care

I make knives that are intended to be put to work. But with heavy use there are some steps to maintain the knife that will keep it in better condition. A little TLC every once in a while will go a long way in keeping it in its best condition.

First priority is keeping the knife dry. Carbon steel, and yes, even stainless steel can rust or corrode if left wet for an extended period of time. Stainless steel is much less prone to rust or corrosion, but still can if neglected. Don’t worry about them getting wet while in use but it’s always good practice to wipe them dry before returning it back to its sheath, especially if it won’t be in use for awhile.

Do not put any knife in the dishwasher! The water and heat both can cause damage to the blade and the handle. It will rust a carbon steel knife, wood handles especially can swell, and the epoxy holding the handle together can be steamed apart. The dishwasher and sink can also dull the blade as it clanks and rattles around into other dishes or flatware.

Cleaning and Storage

The best cleaning method is warm soapy water and if needed, a slightly abrasive scouring pad. Dry thoroughly before putting away. Store with the blade protected using the sheath provided, or if you have a kitchen knife, you could use a magnetic strip or knife block. Do not store loosely in a drawer without the sheath as this will dull the edge as it can make contact with whatever else is in the drawer.

Sharpening and Edge Care

Glass and bamboo cutting boards can dull your blade in a hurry. Wood and plastic cutting boards are much more forgiving and will not dull the blade as quickly.

Using a knife steel, ceramic rod or leather strop regularly makes maintaining a sharp edge a lot easier. Letting it go too long without this touch up will make it harder to get sharp. Eventually every knife will need to be re-sharpened. If you want to do this yourself I recommend products from the company Work Sharp. They have a lot of great products for sharpening your knife and a lot of information about sharpening on YouTube.

However, if your knife does become dull and you don’t feel comfortable sharpening it yourself I offer free sharpening on all the knives I make and you will only be responsible for shipping cost.
